by Roberto AliagaSonja Wimmer (Illustrations)

The text makes you rethink the dark shadows within the storyline, its soft typeface is ghostly.

Children Book design
Week 2
Home task

For 9 - 11 years old, Wonderstruck, by Brian SelznickIllustrator Brian Selznick.

Its illustrations is simple but bold, its focus on the tile which flows well with the illustrations of lighting and a city skyline, yet again its mystery of what the book is about but it does give out that there is a creative storyline that this age group seen keep going back too within being in-depth. Its watercolour painting is soft but the strong use of blue is still bold and powerful as it gives a mid night dream effect, this use is defiantly interesting to the audience. However i do feel that the typeface isn't right and the colour doesn't work too, but i see that they wanted toe typeface to go with the lightning.

For 3-6 years out, Winnie-the-Pooh, by A A Milne Illustrated by E H Shepherd

Its little illustrations around the title are fun and relatable to the stories involved within the book, little colour and little detail is creative that children can understand, yet again a common metamorphosis create a world that the story is telling which has such loveable characters that the children love and understand there fun tales. Its style of water coloured drawing is old fashions but common within this age group.

For toddlers, The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr Author, Illustrator

Its illustrations says it all to the point where you probably doesn't need the title, its colour and detailed drawings is fun and simple. As i remember this story is focus isn't on background but just ideas they need to tell the story and this is the same within its front page, tho i feel the typeface show have need hand done and been more relaxed its focus of the tiger is more powerful.

Children book design
Week 2

Books for 9-11 yrs old (from
http://www.booktrust.org.uk/books/view/33308)
Adding a dark side that interesting for the young audit audience, the illustrations detailed and osculated imagery is intriguing but important within this artistic style that this age group needs to interest them.

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, by Joan Aiken.

This illustration design is very expressive of its dark and mystery story line, using white space within this black and white design, the title is the only colour making its bold along side the black wolf figures. Its typography is old fashions so it gives the idea that the story is old too, adding the thought of a creeping children story like the original Red Riding Hood.

Skelling, by David Almond.

This design is focuses on the main aspect of the book which is the wings, a constant reminder of the books interesting and meaningful story, its drawing style is very similar to a teenager type, making it relatable to the audience, its colours being dark, used look also is a represents the story line too, its little details like this are good for the audience after reading the book and understanding to see and get. It seem to be darker more creative story for this age group, and this is shown within the design of the front pages, its interesting story line has to intrigued to audience with its design. Within these two stories, imaginative and outgoing styles get the audience involved.

Books for baby / toddlers ( from  http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/very-hungry-caterpillar-eric-carle/1100472822)

Relatable story is key within this age group but also fun with leaning, textures is a great way of getting toddles to lean but also naughtiness is fun way of getting my self interesting.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Cale (writer and illustrator)
Its textured and fun design is great for babes and toddles and lean, its bold colours a additive for new and early eyes. Just seeing the Caterpillar on the front pages is enough for the toddler to remember and understand, its fun and creative.

Love You Forever, by Robert N. Munsch, Sheila McGraw (illustrator)

Its illustrators are very detailed, this is to create it as humanly looking as possible as the stories are set  and properly a similar surrounds as a baby or toddler, its fun and naughty story line is decently foreseen in the illustrations which the reader can understand and also find funny.

Books for 3-6 yrs old (http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/age-3-6)

This artist style of detail  is important is something this age group needs and show the adventure / imaginative story.

The Cat in the Hat, by

The famous looking and book is designed for 3 to 6 years old, its rhyme is loved my children and its 3 colour tone character is loved for its metamorphosis understanding. Its design is fun and playful.

Dinosaurs Before Dark, by

Detail is key within this design, its realistic design is what children see and understand the adventure, its something they are also involved in. Softer colours and more focus on the background and other surroundings.
The more detail adds to the fun adventure within the story that is involving the audience.

Task 1

BBC four, When we were very young.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzWcB9cnSqS7a3lBQUpJOUw1cUk/view

Age - 4-8
Audience - mainly boys

Thomas the Tank engine, by Wilbolt Awdry idea of books is based on his childhood, i find this meaningful and realistic, as it comes from his childhood its the best way of connecting within a young audience, but with the link being bad train and a punishment, dark but children loved the stories. Illustrator William Middleton.

Why i have chosen this illustrator is because William Middleton only added a face to an normal train, no arms no legs but simple face and face expressions captured the audience (children) enough to make meaningful things that were loved. its simple expressions give the audience everything they need to know, how they should feel about reading or hearing the story,  "power" interesting that is capture so many children with only two things that make them relatable - a face and a voice, the voice benign the writing and the face being the illustrations, one visual relations that children can understand as so much power within the story.

My thought on the artist style is the same as it was when i was a children watching the tv program and reading the books was that the style was hash and a little too grown up for the audience for example the images below i found there to be unnecessarily detail and the face to be too shaded, i alway felt it was sinister and dark, looking back at it know i see that the story was too.
